A UK Gas Leak Detected from Space: Satellite Data to Climate Action
In spring 2023, a methane leak from a faulty gas pipeline near Cheltenham, UK, was detected by GHGSat satellites. It was the first time a satellite detected a gas leak in the UK.
In this webinar, Dr. Emily Dowd from the University of Leeds will walk us through the behind-the-scenes of this unexpected discovery.
What you'll learn:
-
How satellites caught a leak traditional methods missed
-
How the discovery was verified, and the data was interpreted
-
How this detection drove rapid mitigation action

About Dr. Emily Dowd
Dr. Emily Dowd is a Research Fellow in Greenhouse Gas Modelling at the University of Leeds. She graduated with her PhD from the University of Leeds in 2024, and Emily's research focuses on using satellite data and chemical transport models to investigate changes in atmospheric methane. She is currently working on a project that models clumped isotopes of methane in a global 3D chemical transport model. Emily is also the co-founder of SatSchool, an outreach program that has introduced over 7,000 UK students to Earth observation and climate science.
